About The Author
Leon Jackson Jr. is a lifelong racquet-sports enthusiast, competitor, researcher, and author whose interest extends far beyond any single game. Primarily a racquetball player who has competed successfully at national-level events, he has also explored tennis, squash, badminton, table tennis, and numerous lesser-known racquet and paddle sports. His experience across different disciplines inspired a deeper curiosity about how these games developed, what they share, and what makes each one unique.
That curiosity eventually became an extensive research project. After discovering that there was no single resource documenting the broad range of racquet and paddle sports played around the world, Jackson set out to create one himself. His research examined the history, equipment, playing styles, courts, rules, similarities, and differences of both familiar and obscure sports, including games that had disappeared or never progressed beyond their earliest stages.
His earlier work, Racket Wars: Guide Book to All the World’s Racket Sports, was published in 2014. The project later grew into the expanded Racquet Warriors: Guidebook for All Racket and Paddle Sports, reflecting years of continued research and a commitment to documenting the remarkable diversity of racquet sports.
Through Racquet Warriors, Leon Jackson Jr. aims to educate, surprise, and inspire readers while encouraging them to discover sports beyond the games they already know. His work celebrates the history, athleticism, innovation, and passionate communities that connect racquet and paddle players around the world.
About The Book
Racquet Warriors: The Comprehensive and Definitive Guidebook for All Racket & Paddle Sports by Leon Jackson Jr. is an extensive reference work exploring the remarkable world of racquet and paddle sports. Created after years of research, the book grew from the author’s curiosity about how different racquet sports compare, how their skills transfer from one game to another, and how many lesser-known sports exist beyond familiar games such as tennis, badminton, squash, racquetball, pickleball, and table tennis.
The guide brings together more than 100 racquet and paddle sports, including well-established international games, regional sports, experimental concepts, prototypes, and sports that are no longer widely played. Each section examines the history of the sport, how it is played, the equipment used, the court or playing area, and the physical and technical demands involved. Photographs, illustrations, equipment descriptions, comparative information, and chronological material help readers understand both the similarities and the unique characteristics of each game.
The book is organized into four major categories: Olympic racquet sports; global, national, and regional sports; prototype and experimental sports; and team racquet sports. Its scope ranges from historic games such as Longue Paume, Basque Pelota, Court Tennis, and Tamburello to modern favorites and newer developments in the racquet-sports world.
More than a historical reference, Racquet Warriors is designed to educate, surprise, and inspire readers to discover games they may never have encountered before. Whether you are a player, coach, sports historian, collector, or simply curious about racquet sports, this guide offers a detailed look at the innovation, athleticism, equipment, traditions, and communities that have shaped racquet and paddle sports across generations.
